Solutions for hot water radiator problems

Are you having problems with your hot water radiator? What should you do when your heater seems to have given up the ghost? Discover common problems, practical solutions to solve them, and see when it’s time to call a plumber to keep your heating reliable at all times!

Common problems with hot water radiators

Even the most reliable heating systems are not immune to issues that can affect their performance and efficiency. But rest assured, there is always a solution!

To help you better cope with the unexpected, here are some common problems you might encounter with your hot water heating system, and practical tips for solving them.

Water leak

A water leak can come from worn seals or faulty pipes. How to fix it? Check the connections and tighten the seals. If the leak persists, it may be necessary to replace the faulty parts or call a plumber.

Indicator light off

If the indicator light on your heater is off, it could indicate an electrical problem or that the heater is broken. Check the circuit breaker and electrical connections, and make sure the heater is plugged in properly.

Temperature adjustment

Your heater is not heating to the desired temperature? Check the thermostat settings. Adjust it to your preferences, and make sure the temperature sensor is in good condition.

Setting the timer

An incorrect timer setting can affect the operation of the heating system. Check your appliance’s manual to adjust the timer to your heating settings.

Resetting the heater

As with your computer, resetting your heater can fix many problems! Turn the heater off, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on. This can restore the factory settings and fix some minor issues.

Low water pressure

Low water pressure can affect the heater’s performance. Check the pressure gauge to ensure adequate pressure. If the pressure is too low, you may need to bleed air from the system or check for leaks.

Air in the radiator

Trapped air in radiators can prevent even heating. To correct this, use a bleeder key to release the accumulated air. It is advisable to do this when the system is cold to avoid hot water splashing out.

Frozen pipes

In winter, pipes can freeze and block the flow of water. To thaw frozen pipes, apply a gentle heat source such as a hair dryer, and make sure there is adequate insulation to prevent the pipes from freezing again.

Complete breakdown

If the heater is completely out of order, first check the fuses and electrical connections. If everything seems normal but the problem persists, it is best to contact a qualified plumber for a thorough inspection.

Rust and corrosion

Corrosion can damage the interior of the heater. If you notice any rust or corrosion, clean the affected areas and, if necessary, replace the corroded parts.

Faulty hot water heater: what are the signs to look out for?

Nothing is more frustrating than a hot water radiator that is starting to show signs of fatigue, especially when you rely on it to keep your home or business warm! Fortunately, there are small signs that can alert you before the problems become too serious.

Here are some examples of signs to watch for to prevent major problems:

  • Radiators are lukewarm even when the thermostat is set high: If your radiators are not heating properly even when the thermostat is set to a high temperature, this could indicate a water circulation problem or a fault in the heating system.
  • Hissing or knocking sounds in the pipes: Unusual noises such as hissing, popping, or tapping are often signs of air or pressure problems. These noises may indicate that radiator repairs or bleeding are needed.
  • Strange smells coming from the radiator: Unusual odors such as burning smoke or a metallic smell may indicate a buildup of debris or corrosion. An inspection is necessary to prevent further damage!

What to do when the heater stops working?

In summary, when your radiator stops working, simple actions can help you target the problem before calling a plumber. Here are the first reflexes to adopt:

  • Bleed radiators: Use a bleeder key to remove accumulated air and improve system operation.
  • Check system pressure: Low pressure can reduce heating efficiency. Check your boiler pressure gauge to check recommended levels.
  • Reset water heater: A simple restart of the water heater can work wonders!
  • Check thermostat settings: Incorrect settings can cause insufficient heating.

When should you call a plumber?

There comes a time when even the most robust heating systems require professional intervention. Calling a plumber can make all the difference in avoiding major complications and extending the life of your water heater.

Installation of a toilet pump in the basement

installation de toilette au sous-sol

Installation of a toilet pump in the basement

Whether you want to dig a semi-basement or convert an existing one, chances are you will have a bathroom and toilet in it. Be aware that there are two alternatives for basement toilet pumps: with a macerator and with a lift pump only.

How do you choose the type of pump that will make installing your basement toilet easy and using it convenient? Check out our comparison to learn more about these two types of pumps.

The macerator, the well-known wastewater expert

Probably the best-known system when it comes to wastewater disposal, macerator toilets – as their name suggests – grind waste with each flush using an electric motor. These particles, once reduced, are evacuated through a small-diameter pipe.

Particularly recommended in basements or small spaces where traditional gravity drainage is difficult or impossible, the macerator benefits from many other advantages. In addition to its flexible installation, there are:

  • Great adaptability. We are talking about small spaces, but since it adapts to any drain pipe, it can also be a perfect alternative for equipping the toilets of vans, campers and even boats.
  • Water savings. Since waste is reduced, it does not require as much water as traditional toilets to be expelled.
  • Versatile aesthetics. Its classic or suspended design can blend into any decor.
  • Easy installation. Since it only requires a standard pipe, a water supply, an electrical outlet and a drain connection to be installed, you could do it yourself! That said, if your plumbing knowledge is limited and to avoid any risk of damage due to poor installation, it is better to call a professional.

But behind this idyllic portrait, there are still a certain number of significant drawbacks:

  • Noise. This is probably the most notable flaw of the grinder. Its motor can indeed be heard very clearly when it is activated, that is to say often.
  • An electrical dependency. Without a socket nearby or in the event of a power failure, there is no chance of being able to use it.
  • Sustained maintenance. To avoid clogging your grinder, you will have to clean it very regularly, in particular by descaling it with an appropriate product.
  • A restriction in the waste thrown away. Whether we think of excessive quantities of paper or any other element likely to clog it, you will not be able to get rid of everything in a grinder. At the risk of causing permanent damage to the mechanism.
  • Not very suitable for a main bathroom located in the basement.

As a result, despite the many advantages of toilets with macerators, it is legitimate to deplore their lack of versatility, power and their more complex maintenance. For these different reasons, the pump with integrated macerator in the tank can be positioned as an effective alternative for a secondary bathroom. As a separate system that is generally placed behind a standard toilet, it can even be installed in a closet for greater discretion. It is therefore no less unsightly than toilets with integrated macerator.

But what do we remember about its design?

  • Its power is often greater than toilet models with integrated grinders.
  • Its ability to be connected to several sanitary elements, such as sinks or showers.
  • Its maintenance. The simple fact of being separated from the toilet unit makes the pump with integrated grinder easier to access, and by extension, easier to maintain.

And in terms of small disappointments, we will note again:

  • The potential noise.
  • The electrical operation without a plan B.
  • A possibly higher cost.

Pump with catch basin: the ideal option for a basement toilet

The catchment basin is actually a reservoir buried underground. It will collect water from toilets and other sources in the basement, and the associated pump will evacuate it to the municipal network or another drainage system.

This type of system is particularly recommended for basements located below the water table or in areas subject to water infiltration:

  • By allowing the accumulated water to be evacuated quickly, it limits the consequences of flooding, whether we are talking about structural damage to the foundations or deterioration of the installations.
  • Another welcome feature: the presence of non-return valves. These elements, highly recommended by insurance companies, prevent sewer backups, another source of damage and bad odors.

The sump pump of the catchment basin allows wastewater to be raised from lower levels to the sewers. This is a fairly common system, usually found in multi-unit dwellings for example. The catchment basin is sealed with a pump that has an integrated grinder and a 2-inch discharge pipe, so it is the ideal option for sustained use. The whole thing uses a 120-volt or 240-volt outlet depending on the installation.

Here is an overview of its advantages and disadvantages which could be decisive when making your choice.

In terms of advantages:

  • It is less noisy than a grinder.
  • It handles a large volume of water. Therefore, fewer problems in evacuating wastewater from different sanitary devices, and less risk of blockage.
  • It is known for being easy to maintain. Indeed, regular cleaning is enough to guarantee its durability and efficiency in the long term.

As for the disadvantages:

  • The basin must be installed underground, so the work required is more significant. Moreover, the installation is more complex than that of a macerator. Unless you are a plumber yourself, you will have to call a specialist.
  • Although initially presented as an advantage, its increased water consumption is also an inconvenience.
  • It needs a continuous power supply to operate. In the event of a breakdown, the evacuation of wastewater is interrupted. If the shutdown drags on, hygiene could start to be questionable!
  • The cost of the pump combined with the cost of installation can result in a higher total cost than a grinder.

In conclusion, which system should you choose for your basement toilet?

To make an informed decision, you will therefore need to take into account:

The use of the bathroom

  • The location and height of the main drain.
  • The available space.
  • The noise generated.
  • The number of devices to be connected.
  • The risk of flooding or backflow.

And if you can’t decide which system is best for your basement toilet pump installation, talk to the Plomberie Roger Chayer team. With their experience spanning 4 generations, they will be able to guide you towards the appropriate solution to meet your constraints. Then, when will this basement bathroom be fitted out?

Natural gas, propane or electric water heater: Comparison

Chauffe-eau au gaz naturel, au propane ou électrique

Natural gas, propane or electric water heater: Comparison

Is it time to change your water heater? Why not take the opportunity to evaluate the different systems available on the market?

Natural gas, propane or electric: each has its advantages and disadvantages. But do you know them in detail? Depending on your situation, one model could be more appropriate than another.

How to find out? By consulting our complete comparison of natural gas, propane or electric water heaters.

Electric water heater: the most used in Quebec

You probably have an idea of what an electric water heater is. But do you know how it works?

An electric water heater uses heating elements immersed in a tank filled with water. When the water is cold, a thermostat triggers the elements to turn on and heat the water by conduction. Once the desired temperature is reached, the thermostat cuts off the power supply. And once the water is cold again, the cycle automatically starts again to maintain the desired temperature.

90%: this is the share occupied by electric water heaters among all residential water heaters in Quebec. Why such success? First of all, probably for their ease of installation. They do not require any evacuation system, connect to the electrical connection already in place, and everything is very safe. If you want to replace an electric water heater with a similar model, there will be no issues to report. The problems will be more significant if you want to switch from electric to gas, especially if you do not have a gas line.

What are the other advantages of an electric water heater?

  • Its purchase cost is lower than a gas model (between $100 and $200 less).
  • It can be installed just as easily in tight spaces.
  • Since Quebec has hydroelectric energy, it is a process that is, all in all, economical.
  • It requires little maintenance. However, an annual inspection is recommended and will guarantee its durability.
  • It heats water quite quickly.
  • Its environmental impact is controlled. Indeed, in addition to hydroelectricity, it can also be powered by solar or wind energy.

Now what about its drawbacks?

  • Since it runs on electricity, it’s best not to have a power outage!
  • Although light maintenance is sufficient, it will require descaling approximately every two years.
  • It consumes more energy than a gas model.

A quick glance seems to give the electric water heater a leg up. But let’s take a closer look at the features of natural gas water heaters.

Natural gas water heater: Continued reliability

The natural gas water heater, on the other hand, uses a burner powered by gas to heat the water contained in a tank. This gas is routed to the burner via a control valve, and will be ignited by an electronic igniter or a pilot light. The flame thus produced heats the water by convection. And again, a thermostat cuts off the gas supply when the desired temperature is reached. This cycle resumes as soon as the water cools down.

A 2011 census reported that 50% of Canadian homes were equipped with such a system. The data on this option could use an update, but it does mention its possible limitations.

Why natural gas water heater might be right for you?

Because it is:

  • Economical. Even in Quebec where we benefit from advantageous electricity rates, natural gas is generally less expensive.
  • Efficient. Models with tanks in particular use less energy than electric water heaters.
  • Fast. It heats water in a shorter time than the electric alternative.
  • Reliable. No power problem, it works on continuous power supply.

On the other hand, its drawbacks might make you think twice before opting for this solution:

  • Installation is particularly difficult. If there is no gas connection, you will need to have one installed, as well as ventilation to the outside and a carbon monoxide detector.
  • Bulky and demanding. To meet all safety precautions, it requires more space.
  • Economical in the long term. But when you buy it, it will cost you more than an electric model.

Finally, if you already have a gas line, this system could quickly become profitable for you. Otherwise, you will have to ask yourself if its promise of continuous supply is really worth it.

Propane water heater: victim of its unavailability

The propane water heater has relatively the same operating mode and the same characteristics as its natural gas cousin: good energy efficiency, not dependent on electric current and easy to maintain. That said, it still suffers from several defects that explain its fall into disuse in recent years:

  • Its distribution is not ensured by networks like natural gas. It must be delivered by truck in tanks.
  • Its use has a certain cost. Its price is higher than that of natural gas, so in use, it is also less economical.
  • It is a fossil hydrocarbon that does not really fit into the greener options recommended today.
  • The variety of propane models is less impressive than that of electric or propane gas water heaters.

So what type of household might it be relevant for? For someone looking for an energy-efficient appliance, but who is not connected to the natural gas network.

In summary, what does the choice of your future water heater depend on?

Mainly from your home. Do you have a gas connection? Is there enough space available for its installation? Are you prepared to pay a little more up front to ensure a longer-term return on investment?

These questions do not have obvious and easy answers. In such a case, it is better to call on specialists like the teams at Plomberie Roger Chayer. In addition to giving you the right time on the option that will be the most reliable and economical for you, they will be able to support you for the installation, repair and maintenance of your water heater, whatever your system.

Hot water radiator: An ecological alternative for heating

radiateur à eau chaude

Hot water radiator: An ecological alternative for heating

Wood stoves, electric baseboard heaters, heat pumps, gas boilers: there is no shortage of heating options in Quebec! In this unexpected range, hot water radiators stand out ecologically.

Yet, nationally, they are only 5% of households who say they use this option as their main heater; the province most receptive to its assets is Prince Edward Island, with 19% of households having them.

Little or little known, the hot water radiator therefore deserves to (re)find its letters of nobility! Thanks to a portrait presenting its operation, its advantages and its (some) disadvantages, you will be able to learn more about this ecological alternative for the heating. And why not, choose it for you!

How the hot water radiator works and available models

As you will have understood, hot water plays a key role in the operation of this type of radiator. It is first heated by a heating system – in the majority of cases, an electric boiler or gas – which moves in the tubes of a closed circuit, before being diffused and released as heat progressively, via the radiators. This diffusion can be done by convection (with the movement of water), or by radiation (through the hot wall of the radiator). As for the fuel used by the boiler, it can be natural gas, propane, electricity or even wood.

On the market, the hot water radiator comes in an impressive variety of designs, which can adapt to any decor. Among them, we can cite:

  • Panel radiators, the most common. Generally mounted on a wall, they contain a network of tubes through which hot water circulates, and can be installed horizontally or vertically.
  • Plinth radiators, which look like the first ones, but this time, will be installed on the floor.
  • Towel radiators which, as their name suggests, are primarily designed to heat the bathroom and dry towels.

As for the materials used for their manufacture, again, the options are diversified:

  • Cast iron, which is a durable material, retaining heat long after the boiler has shut down.
  • Steel, lighter, which has the capacity to offer a rapid rise in temperature.
  • Aluminium, which is also light, with good thermal conductivity, and which allows components to be heated and cooled quickly. Bonus: it gives a decidedly more modern look than its predecessors.

With this short statement, you are already able to get a better idea of the styles and materials that might suit your needs. Let’s take our analysis a step further, with the advantages, disadvantages and prices proposed for this type of system.

Hot water radiator: advantages and disadvantages

If we allow ourselves to present the hot water radiator to you in such detail, it is because this heating option has many qualities. Whether in its design, its energy consumption or its durability, it fully deserves to be highlighted in our heating alternatives.

First of all, its versatility: you will inevitably find a model that will match your interior. Along the same lines, it is also very fair to talk about its versatility of use with different fuels. We mentioned natural gas, propane and wood, but we could just as easily have mentioned air-water heat pumps or water-water, or even thermal solar panels.

Regarding the heat itself, it is a system that produces gentle and uniform heat quickly. And since it uses hot water as its main energy source, it wins the prize for energy saving!! Finally, the majority of models are recognized for their solidity, quiet operation and durability (25 to 35 years).

In terms of disadvantages, the most often mentioned is undoubtedly the maintenance that must be done on a regular basis. The most well-known manipulation is “purge” which consists of letting the trapped air escape so as not to hinder the proper functioning of the system in its entirety. It will also be necessary to remove any dust that could accumulate there so as not to hinder its effectiveness. Add to this a check of the water pressure, pipes and valves – to prevent the appearance of possible cracks and therefore water leaks – and you will have all the crucial points to watch out for. And finally, if it is not equipped with a temperature regulator, it can be complex to control precisely. Fortunately, the most recent models often have them automatically.

Price of a hot water radiator

We’ve talked about the pros and cons, now what about the price? Well, it is difficult to give, because it depends on several factors:

  • The style and the material, but also the brand, the size, the power.
  • The installation. Is it planned in a new residence or as part of a replacement? In which case, this will surely require some adjustments.

Overall, we can say that it will cost you a few hundred dollars to install on top of the purchase cost.

As a summary, we therefore have a system available at a reasonable price, which can be set up quickly and easily, very efficient from an energy point of view, and above all very durable, for relatively minimal maintenance. For all these reasons, the hot water radiator can definitely be named as the ecological alternative for heating par excellence!

Not completely convinced yet?

Tankless Water Heater: An advantageous option?

chauffe-eau instantané et chauffe-eau avec réservoir

Tankless Water Heater: An advantageous option?

Do you know the tankless water heater? Also sold as an instant water heater, its main characteristic is that it does not have a tank. Consequently, in the absence of hot water storage, it heats it only when necessary, when the tap is opened.

Although the tankless water heater is not a completely new technique, it seems to be making a notable breakthrough in the Quebec residential market in recent years. More compact, less energy consuming, it arouses interest as well as discussions, because of its advantages… and its disadvantages!

So, is the tankless water heater really an advantageous option? Let’s take stock together so you can make an informed decision on the matter.

The advantages of the tankless water heater: less waste, longer!

Why do we hear about the electric tankless water heater? Because this alternative has many advantages recognized on the market:

  • By its definition, we can quickly decide on its major advantage: that of being able to provide water to the right temperature in an almost infinite way, so no situation where the last person who takes a shower has no hot water!
  • Since the water is only heated when you need it, you avoid the energy loss generated by storing preheated water. By extension, the obligation to save hot water is no longer an obligation!! As proof: the possible energy savings are estimated at 30%, compared to a conventional water heater.
  • The second big advantage of this type of installation is its compact and lightweight design. The absence of a tank represents a significant saving of space. If you live in a small home, a condo or if you need to supply a secondary source of water (sink, hand basin, bathroom, etc.), you will be delighted to benefit from its performance.
  • Still in the design chapter, the absence of a balloon removes the need for a protective device to regulate the pressure inside the water heater. Installation is extremely easy, since a simple electrical outlet is enough to turn it on.
  • Its installation must be carried out near the shower. Since the water source is close, less water is wasted than when it has to come from your basement.
  • We don’t think much about it, but stored water is ultimately stagnant water which presents the risk of bacteria developing there. With this type of storage-free arrangement, there is no threat of bacterial proliferation!!
  • In terms of maintenance, the tankless water heater is also very interesting. Apart from descaling every two to four years, it requires no additional action to maintain its performance.
  • We are also dealing with a device whose lifespan is generally double of that of a tank water heater, which sometimes needs to be replaced due to its age for insurance purposes.
  • Reduced energy consumption and water waste, durability, fewer elements to replace in the event of a change: no doubt, you here you have a solution whose environmental footprint is controlled.

Faced with such a portrait, we are entitled to wonder why – according to CAA Quebec – 90% of Quebec homes still have a tank water heater.

Pros also mean cons, and those of the tankless water heater are notable enough to rethink your purchase.

Disadvantages of instantaneous water heaters: questionable savings and reliability

The instantaneous water heater is not its first debate. In an article from La Presse, Alain Chayer, co-owner of Plomberie Roger Chayer, already outlined the main limitations of the device:

«In winter, the ground is frozen, and the drinking water comes to us very cold. It takes a lot of power to quickly heat it to 70°C.” – Alain Chayer.

And the faster the water is heated, the greater the energy required.

The article in question also highlights water consumption which, in Quebec, is not billed. In other words, with traditional water heaters, yes, there is a waste of water, but without financial consequences. With the instantaneous water heater, energy consumption can still be notable in cold weather, and therefore, impact our electricity bill.

Generally speaking, the disadvantages of the instantaneous water heater greatly affect the wallet!

  • As long as the tap is not closed, hot water flows, with the corresponding power consumption.
  • On paper, a single electrical outlet seems sufficient. That said, it may require modifications or adjustments for gas power (much less eco-friendly).
  • Purchase and installation costs will not necessarily outweigh your potential savings. In fact, the device costs two to three times more expensive than a classic model and its installation can reach $2000, especially if you need to correct your electrical input.
  • If you install a single tankless water heater for a household of more than two people, you will probably observe temperature variations. Such an installation is actually not suitable for supplying several taps at the same time, or for meeting an intensive need for hot water.

Finally, it appears that in Quebec, the tankless water heater is not the most optimal solution. Exception made for small homes, recent homes, households of two people or less, or as a backup system. If you are looking for a device that is both economical and ecological, the water heater with tank remains valid. And to increase its performance, make sure you choose it at a capacity suitable for your home, and with an Energy Star certification. You will thus be sure to respond correctly to your hot water and financial constraints.

Advice like this, Alain Chayer and the specialists at Plomberie Roger Chayer, are able to provide you with it, whatever your installation, your budget and your needs.

Do you want to have the best investment/savings/efficiency ratio in plumbing? Questions about installation or even water heater repair? We are available to assist you courteously and quickly!

Frozen pipe: What to do?

tuyau gelé

Frozen pipe: What to do?

Extremely cold temperatures are dangerous for the water pipes of a residence or business. When the pipes are frozen, you must act quickly, otherwise you risk seeing them burst and having to deal with water damage.

It is therefore crucial to know what to do in the event of a frozen pipe to minimize potential damage. Read on to learn more about the causes and consequences of frozen pipes, and what to do if such a situation occurs.

Frozen pipe: what are the causes?

Frozen pipes are often caused by extremely low temperatures, which can freeze water in the pipes. Pipes that are not adequately insulated can also be more vulnerable to cold temperatures, as can pipes that are too often exposed to cold drafts.

Frozen pipes: are there any risks?

Frozen water in plumbing can cause many problems, including the risk of pipes bursting. Burst pipes can cause considerable water damage to your home or business, and often require costly repairs. In addition, frozen pipes can also cause water supply problems, with all the inconvenience that this causes.

How to detect a frozen pipe?

Do you suspect one of your ducts is frozen? Several signs can help you confirm your doubts. If you notice a decrease in water flow or notice strange noises coming from the pipes, one of your pipes may be frozen. Stylish odors can also be a sign of frozen pipes.

If you suspect your plumbing is frozen, it is important to take steps to perform a pipe thaw as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

What to do when pipes are frozen?

The priority is to precisely locate where the pipes are frozen. This is where knowing your home’s insulation weaknesses comes in handy. Pipes close to exterior walls are more likely to freeze, especially if the walls face north. Look in areas that tend to cool more quickly, such as closets, kitchen or bathroom cabinets.

The frozen part of a pipe is easy to recognize: it may be frosted, icy, slightly bulging or cracked. Once the area is located, use a hair dryer or electric heater to help thaw the pipe.

Prevention tips to keep your pipes from freezing

To prevent your pipes from freezing, turn off the exterior water supply, locate your interior water inlet and make sure the temperature is 10°C or more.

Insulate the pipes most likely to freeze, especially those near exterior walls, in crawl spaces, attic and garage. Seal air leaks around windows, doors, electrical wiring and dryer vent.

What to do in periods of intense cold?

It’s a good idea to keep cabinet doors open to let warm air circulate, have someone check the house regularly while you’re away, and allow a thin stream of water to flow to maintain circulation in the pipes. It is equally important to make sure the drain is not blocked so to avoid water damage.

Drain inspection by camera: price and procedure

inspection de drain par caméra

Drain inspection by camera: price and procedure

Proper and regular maintenance of your piping system is essential to prevent breaks, leaks and other inevitable plumbing-related malfunctions. Camera drain inspection is one of the methods used to examine the drainage system. But what is the procedure, and how much does it cost?

What is a drain inspection?

The drain is a pipe that carries wastewater to the sewer system. When residue creates a blockage in the drain, it can no longer allow water to flow freely. Needless to say, clogged pipes are detrimental to the proper functioning of your plumbing system. The risk of cracks and flooding is then increased, not to mention that a clogged drain can promote the growth of mold and put your health at risk.

The drain inspection then consists of checking whether your pipes contain clogs, cracks, roots, etc.

What procedure for a camera drain inspection?

The camera inspection process is very simple. Your plumber will attach a waterproof camera to a long metal cable, which will then be inserted inside your pipes. An image will be projected on a high resolution device to determine if the pipes are in good condition. The slightest anomaly will be identified, which will make it possible to make the necessary corrections to avoid possible serious problems in your plumbing system.

After a rigorous inspection, your plumber will give you a detailed report of the results, as well as an estimate of the price of repairs if necessary.

What is the difference between a drain inspection with camera and a traditional inspection?

A conventional drain inspection usually involves the use of a long metal rod (probe). This is inserted into the pipe opening at the end of the sewer line and moved to the other end of the line. This technique is simple and easy to apply, but probes can get stuck in debris inside the drain. They can also break when hitting something hard or sharp, which can lead to additional repairs.

As for the drain inspection with camera, they offer several advantages not offered by the conventional method:

  • Extremely precise inspection thanks to high-resolution cameras
  • Allows you to reach hard-to-reach areas
  • The monitor captures all anomalies, even microcracks
  • Easy to use, camera-based method fixes problems quickly
  • Reduced labor time, lighter bill

Drain inspection by camera: what price to expect?

The price to have the drains inspected depends on the equipment used, the size of the pipes and their ease of access. Although costs vary from contractor to contractor, you can expect to pay between $230 and $2,500 for a drain inspection with camera. The price for drain inspection can also be influenced by: the type of drain, the type of property, the length of the drains, their location and the distance between them.

When to perform a drain inspection?

Different plumbing issues may require a camera inspection. For example, slow drains can be a sign that debris is obstructing the free flow of water. The backflow of sewage is another clue; if they go up in several sinks and toilets, a problem in the drainage system could be at fault.

How to Unclog a Sink or Washbasin

débouchage du drain d'évier

How to Unclog a Sink or Washbasin

It’s inevitable — over time, every sink ends up accumulating residue such as soap, toothpaste, hair, and other debris. If you’re trying to unclog your sink and don’t know where to start, don’t worry — drain unclogging is one of the easiest plumbing repairs to handle.

Should You Use Chemical Cleaners to Unclog a Sink?

When the bathroom sink is clogged, it’s tempting to look for the quickest fix. While chemical drain cleaners can seem effective in the short term, they often cause long-term problems. Why? The acids in these products can damage your plumbing’s enamel and finishes. In addition, inhaling toxic fumes poses health risks. Even low concentrations of these chemicals can pollute groundwater reserves.

Natural Methods to Unclog a Sink

The most effective and safest way to remove debris from a drain is still the manual method. It protects your pipes while reducing health and environmental risks.

Pour Hot Water Down the Drain

Here’s a simple trick that helps dissolve residue. After removing standing water from the sink, pour boiling water down the drain. The heat helps melt away grease and debris, allowing water to flow freely again.

Use a Wire Hanger

A wire hanger can work wonders for dislodging stubborn clogs. After clearing any standing water with a plunger, insert a bent wire into the drain and move it back and forth to loosen debris. Then, flush with hot water to wash everything away — and you’re done!

Clean the P-Trap Under the Sink

If nothing seems to work, check the condition of your P-trap — the curved pipe located right under the sink. Heavy debris like hair, coffee grounds, fruit pulp, or grease can slow down water flow without completely blocking it.

To fix the issue, disassemble the pipe and clean out any buildup. This task can get messy, so be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses, and have a bucket and towels ready.

How to change a faucet cartridge

If a faucet is leaking at the base or dripping incessantly, this usually means that you need to change the valve cartridge. This will prevent the faucet from wearing out to the point that it needs replacing.

Changing a faucet cartridge is easy to do yourself, as long as you follow the necessary steps to ensure a job well done!

Warning signs that your cartridge needs changing

A faucet consists of a single knob that regulates the water temperature and flow. A ceramic cartridge containing two superimposed discs with openings in the middle is what enables this dual function. The discs move along with the knob, allowing hot or cold water to flow, according to the desired temperature.

However, this action results in wear and tear over time. When hard water deposits cause the discs to wear out or break, it’s time to replace the cartridge.

Changing the faucet cartridge

You can change your own faucet cartridge, even if you have no particular knowledge in that area. Just follow the instructions below:

  1. First, get your replacement cartridge, making sure to choose the correct model. Cartridges are often under warranty. To find out if yours is covered, contact the manufacturer of your faucet or the store where you purchased it.
  2. Turn off the hot and cold water supply to the faucet.
  3. Turn the faucet on all the way to let the water out of the pipes. This should only take a few seconds.
  4. Remove the cap from the knob and unscrew the assembly.
  5. Once you’ve removed the knob, twist off the bonnet nut in order to access the cartridge.
  6. Unscrew the screw retaining the cartridge so that you can remove it from the faucet. Keep the old cartridge in case you need it for reference when purchasing your new one.
  7. Change the O-rings in the cartridge. You may also need to replace the washers in the faucet if they show signs of wear. With time, they can weaken, exacerbating any leaks.

Cleaning the aerator

While you’re at it, you can take advantage of the opportunity to clean the piece situated at the tip of the faucet in order to eliminate any hard water deposits. If you can’t remove it by hand, use a pair of pliers, a small flathead screwdriver or a wrench.

Use a cloth to protect the piece, turning it gently, taking care not to damage it. You can then soak it in a bowl containing hot water and vinegar. This will dissolve any stubborn deposits.

Reassembling the faucet with the new cartridge

Once you’ve completed the steps above, you’re ready to replace the cartridge! It’s fairly easy to do. Place the new cartridge inside the faucet and turn it until the notches are properly aligned. You can then tighten the nut, as well as the rosette on the cartridge.

Need a water-heater repair technician? You’ll find one here!

Because a water heater is an indispensable piece of equipment in any home, it’s essential for it to function properly. However, since nothing’s perfect, certain problems can arise. Luckily, some of these problems are easy to fix. Replacing your water heater in its entirety isn’t necessarily the only solution! In this regard, an experienced water-heater repair technician can give you sound advice.

Here are a few examples of common problems that are simple to resolve.

How to correct problems with your water heater

Is there no more hot water?

In this situation, the heating element is undoubtedly the problem. If it’s defective, you’ll need to replace it.

You can also check the temperature regulator. How? Start by turning off the power to the water heater. Carefully remove the heating element access panel. Next, remove the insulation and the heating element cover and press the RESET button. If nothing happens, your temperature regulator is probably damaged. Luckily, it’s very easy to do all the work yourself.

Is the water not hot enough?

The solution is simple: just turn up the temperature! If your water heater temperature is set below 120 degrees and the water isn’t hot enough for you, raise it to 130 degrees and see if it makes a difference. If the water is still lukewarm, you can try pressing the RESET button. You can also check to see if the hot water pipes are well insulated. If not, you can easily install self-adhesive foam insulation on them.

Is there a water leak?

Have you observed water leaking from your water heater? You may need to repair or replace the pressure relief valve. If the valve appears to be in good condition, the cause of the problem may be excess pressure inside the tank. To reduce the pressure, lower the temperature setting to 130 degrees.

Does the fuse burn out often?

In the middle of a nice hot shower, has the water ever suddenly turned ice-cold? Your circuit breaker may be to blame. Check the electrical connections and the wall outlet where the water heater is plugged in. Additionally, you can check the wiring and the connectors. The power supply wires may also be too small for your level of consumption.

However, be careful! If you aren’t comfortable checking everything yourself, don’t take any risks. Instead, call on the services of a qualified water-heater repair technician.

Does the water smell bad?

Sometimes the water coming from the water heater can give off a foul odour, regardless of whether the equipment runs on gas or electricity. Most of the time, a putrid odor is caused by the proliferation of bacteria. To address the problem, you should first turn off the cold water supply and then open the hot water tap (to relieve pressure in the pipes). Next, empty the tank. Open the pipefitting on one side and pour hydrogen peroxide inside. Close everything up again and turn the water back on so that it flows through the pipes.
