The important role of a check valve

tuyau de plomberie

A check valve, also called a backflow prevention valve, plays a very important part in ensuring the safety of your home, store or other business. It prevents wastewater from the municipal sewer system and rainwater from backing up into the basement via sanitary equipment or floor drains. A backflow prevention valve is a small device installed on the main line of your plumbing system or on the drainpipe connections. It controls the flow of wastewater, only allowing it to travel in one direction. Each check valve consists of a flap that, when necessary, stops wastewater or rainwater from backing up. Backflow occurs when sewage or rainwater backs up toward a building or property. In general, this happens when a sewer is obstructed, damaged or overloaded, when there are heavy rains or violent storms or when a river overflows its banks.

The various types of backflow prevention valves

At Plomberie Roger Chayer, we install four different types of valves, depending on their use:

  • For each drainpipe on appliances such as washing machines or equipment situated underneath the street, we install “normally-closed” check valves, which are the most common type. The swinging or tilting disc of the valve opens to allow wastewater to flow and then closes again.
  • A “normally-open” check valve allows water and air to flow at all times, only closing in the event of backflow. These valves are used in certain types of dwellings.
  • Inflatable check valves can be installed on the main conduit. These devices utilize a balloon that inflates and blocks the pipe when it detects water backflow. Once the water stops backing up, the balloon deflates and returns to its original position. One of the advantages of this system is that it’s maintenance-free.
  • An insert check valve is introduced into the pipe with the aid of its elastomer rings.
